Total Quality Management: Creating Vision in Your Community Pharmacy

Foundational Strategies: Creating a Vision

To build a thriving business it is essential to design a vision for both your personal life and pharmacy. Through a vision statement, you define your direction, dreams, and an image of the desired future for your life and business. Your vision must be realistic, make sense in regards to your business and lifestyle, and push you outside of your comfort level. This will move you from where you currently are to your desired state.

Building a Shared Vision

As a means of setting a central goal that the entire pharmacy team will aspire to reach, the vision statement helps to provide a focus for the mission of the pharmacy. It is essential that your vision is shared with the people that surround you. Sharing the vision you've created for your pharmacy with your staff, discussing the current reality and what's in it for them, will help develop your vision into a reality. When there's ownership and employee buy-in, it fosters compliance, support, and a team working in the same direction. However, if you impose your vision, your employees will be tempted to go in the opposite direction. All too often people have a "What's in it for me?" mindset. Your employees need to think if it's good for the owner and pharmacy, it must good for them.  How do you plan on showing your appreciation to the team that helped you achieve your vision?

Professional Visions and Personal Dreams

As a pharmacy owner, it is just as important to have a vision for your personal life as it is your pharmacy. Personal and professional visions must be comparable to each other. For example, if your goal is to increase your business by 20 percent, how will your personal life be affected by the growth? What would you do if you had 20 percent more at the end of the year? Would you take your family on a Hawaiian cruise, buy a new convertible, or contribute to your retirement fund? Whatever the vision may be, you need to be able to create a mental picture of what the future state looks, feels, smells, and tastes like.

Building a Bigger Future

At Pharmacy Development Services we are dedicated to Building Bigger Futures for our members.

Our Business Development Coaching program is designed to help identify your goals, develop a plan that will help you attain those goals, measure your progress on a quarterly basis. It's about creating a standard to measure the growth and progress of yourself and others within your pharmacy. We can help you take your pharmacy and personal life from where it is today to where you want it to be with with a detailed plan, dedicated coach, and personal focus specialist.

If your vision includes increasing sales and taking your customer service to the next level, re-examining your existing marketing plan is key. Armed with a business coach and the NCPA-PDS Marketing Solution Center, we can help build and maintain the relationship you have with your existing patients, increase the dollar amount per transaction, and attract new, high-value customers.

Do you have a vision? If so, we'd love to hear it! Remember, the first step in making your vision a reality is to share it with others.
