Change is inevitable, especially in the independent pharmaceutical business which faces challenges on numerous fronts. Christi used insights from PDS to make positive changes at Gibbs Pharmacy — several of which boosted employee morale and helped increase the bottom line. In 2018, for example, Gibbs implemented a two bonus structure — one for individuals and one for teams. Using an outline from the PDS Resources in PDS Advantage, they implemented a team bonus program purely off profit per prescription. Gibbs believed in it so much, he decided to double the amount paid out in bonuses. With those new incentives, some motivated employees started earning bonuses that doubled their normal monthly check. And sales increased as a result of employees upselling certain OTC products, getting customers interested and enrolled in the SyncRx+ program, using a coupon card to reduce copay and getting prior authorizations or therapeutic optimizations. “Incremental income keeps getting created for our staff through these programs,” Christi says. The pharmacy’s gross profit began the year in 2018 around $14 per prescription. Months later, it had increased to $21 per prescription.
