Our motivation is to connect and do the right thing for the patient without having any ulterior motives. If it‘s not good for the patient, we’re not doing it.

Bobbie Barbrey
Owner

  • Increasing Profitability by Expanding Offerings

With a renewed focus on diversifying their core offerings — retail pharmacy, compounding, med packaging and health & wellness, Medicap more than tripled its net profit from 2017. Vitamin sales climbed to more than $7,000 a month, surpassing the goal set for 2018. Compounding sales were up $6,000 a month, which represented a 16% increase in sales. “PDS has played a big role in propelling us forward and bringing in new opportunities to improve profitability,” Bobbie says. “It’s a wonderful thing for people who are considering joining; they will learn new ways to improve their profitability.” Medicap’s Business Coach, Juliet Brown, and Performance Specialist, Stephanie Zimmerman, also have helped define their metrics. They’ve both kept him and his staff on track while teaching them how to analyze the data. Bobbie looks forward to being challenged on his strategy. He’s learned to ask himself why things aren’t working and what he needs to do to adapt.

  • Improving the Workplace Culture Improves Customer Satisfaction

Bobbie attributes Medicap’s success in 2018 to the focus they put on their staff, training and culture. At the 2018 PDS Super Conference, Bobbie was inspired by a talk from fellow PDS Member and business owner, Chris Cornelison. What stood out to him was Chris’ insistence on one simple fact, “if you don’t have a written culture, you don’t have a culture.” Although he believed Medicap had a solid structure, he realized it wasn’t in writing. He determined that his number one job was to hire the right people that fit into a well-defined culture and train them properly on Medicap’s mission. “Our motivation is to connect and do the right thing for the patient without having any ulterior motives. If it’s not good for the patient, we’re not doing it.” He knows he has great people that run the day-to-day activities and he lets them get the job done without getting in the way. Bobbie believes holding his team accountable improves both profitability and satisfaction. “Pharmacy is the best it’s ever been, but you must let go of how you used to do it. This avalanche of change is happening right before our eyes and if you’re not careful, you’ll get sucked into it instead of riding the top of the avalanche where the view is incredible.”
